:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from D. Harrington -- The Novel As Crane Wrote It : See the essay, part of the book, titled "The Red Badge of Courage Nobody Knows" by Henry Binder. Only the Avon and WW Norton editions have the novel as Crane himself wrote it. All other versions are from the original Appleton edition and thousands of words were cut out of it, at the publisher's insistence. Crane wrote a novel about war which the publisher hesitated to publish as is, afraid that it would offend sensibilities. So they ordered extensive cuts, and Crane obliged in a very haphazard fashion.....The Appleton version has the ending so that Henry Fleming becomes a man after all, and changes for the better. But this version comes very close to being a different novel than Crane wrote----in the original manuscript, Fleming has NOT changed, though everyone around him has. He is the same selfish, self-absorbed individual. His companions have all seen combat and have been humbled by their experiences. But not the youth. If you want to read the novel as originally written, make sure you have the Avon edition or the WW Norton edition. WW Norton ISBN 0393319547 ( Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2020 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from beavis1bww -- Do not buy this kindle version : I am not reviewing the book so much as I am alerting potential buyers not to buy this kindle version. Like other kindle books that I have bought on Amazon at a low price it is almost unreadable and comes across as a bad translation. Or as translated by a computer program. This isn't the worst that I've bought, but I highly advise against purchasing this. Amazon has been good about about offering refunds and has told me that they aren't necessarily aware when they are selling a bad kindle product until they get reader feedback. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Rich Halecki -- Finally got around to it : This book was always held up to me as THE book about war. As I'm not particularly interested in war, it held no attraction. But there's something to be said about being associated with the best of the best. So, I ordered it and read it. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2020 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from MJ -- The Road from Cowardice to Courage : An extraordinary book for its time, Stephen Crane describes the intimate details and the innermost thoughts of a newly minted soldier on the front lines of a Civil War battlefield. With bullets whizzing about him, and thick smoke and corpses as a backdrop, Henry flees his first encounter with battle. As he wanders about in the aftermath, he struggles with his shame and seeks rationalizations for his cowardice. Was he not the wiser for having fled a battle that was lost? Does not an animal flee a predator when sensing the predator is a superior force? But then Henry discovers that his battalion actually won the battle, and he returns to it after suffering a rather ignominious wound. But his comrades assume he was shot in the head and consider him a hero. Henry is transformed and goes on to fight courageously, earning the admiration of his comrades. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from P. Yates -- There's a reason it's a classic : It took me a while to get into the story because I had been reading so many modern novels lately, but once I did, it became a glorious and horrific wonder for my imagination. The story spelled out the inner workings of a mind on the battlefield in ways I haven't encountered in other novels. After chapter 3 I was captivated! I fully and heartily recommend pressing through if the beginning seems a bit stilted to you. The ending left this reader satisfied, not as if there's some happily ever after, but because there is some gleaming of hope even in the bitter horrors of combat. Crane captures the full gamut quite well. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2017 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Edwin Charles Lowe -- A Classic American Novel...An Exceptional Read!!! : This novel is the fictionalized story of a young man who enlists in the Federal Army in the midst of the American Civil War (1860-1865). The boys illusions about himself and warfare are shattered during his first battle as he runs from battle in fear for his life. The story recounts his struggle to come to grips with himself in order to overcoming his fears and redeem himself through heroic actions during a subsequent battle. Despite the fact the author never experienced combat I believe that the battle descriptions serve as a bench marks for all war novels. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2017 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from M. Dowden -- A War Classic : Alas Stephen Crane passed away at only twenty-eight years of age from tuberculosis. Not only just a writer of novels and short stories, Crane was also a poet, and what is remarkable about this particular work we have here, is that although this is in the league of top war stories, Crane himself never served in any conflict when he wrote this, which when you think of the authors of the top war novels you find that the others did serve in conflicts. - 3.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- An "All quiet on the Western Front" for the nineteenth century. : I know I should read it in awe but I feel like Joey and Rachel feel about Citizen Kane. What is all the fuss about. It debunks a romantic ideal of glorious armies advancing through sunlit fields with banners streaming to vanquish a valiant but flawed enemy. Perhaps this is the original "look how war is hell" book and that gives it it's place as a classic. The boredom, fear, terror shame, rites of passage, eye opening experience wreathed in battle smoke prods you into thinking. The chaos, the underlying ineptitude of the commanders which transfers itself to the angry ignorance of the troops takes you into the world of that American War of schismic pain. The language and attitudes are of the time adding to the reality of a war fought in rural farmland between farmers and sons of farmers. Maybe there is something more than I sensed. Worth reading to envisage a young man's experience of the first modern war. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 14, 2015 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from H. Tee -- War. what is it good for? : This is the famous America war story written in 1895 by Crane. The introductory notes make the point that Stephen had no first hand experience of war to write such an eloquent image of war. I understand this is often a school set-text ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 1, 2012 )
